Hi all
I am delighted to inform you all that the first NLC sighting of 2007 has been made by my sister and I last night (May 17/18th). Late yesterday evening at 22.30 BST after observing the crescent Moon I walked to a distant hill and watched for NLCS. I was 70% sure I seen a faint form in the north and so I reported it to Tom Mc Ewan and Ken Kennedy.
02.45 - 03.05 BST
Before dawn on the same night my sister and I were having a walk through the countryside with our dog (Benson) when we both spotted the first positive NLC display of 2007. I was really impressed with my sister because she said 'that's NLCS' before I said anything to her (she became an expert after last years season). 7 degrees above the horizon was a fairly bright (Type 2) blue-white display (blue was more vivid) extending from the N - NE sky some + 60 degrees in azimuth. It stood out against the morning twilight in striking contrast and the soft Veil (Type 1) was embedded within Auriga, Perseus, Triangulum, Aries and Pisces. I took a number of images which picked it up very well despite its diffuse nature. I had a feeling the NLC season would start early this year and I was glad my instincts were correct. I have never seen them so early before. I believe this is an omen indicating that the 2007 season could be spectacular.! Ken Kennedy emailed me today and expressed interest in any sightings which fall outside the typical window periods. Circumstantial evidence suggests this could be a sign of global warming.
My 1st display of 2007 and my 49th NLC display overall. Here's the images...
