Good to see that not only do we have a new sunspot after a protracted quiet period, but also that IAA member and former EAAS Chairman John McConnell has had his excellent photograph of it published on Spaceweather! www.spaceweather.com/Congrats John! We'll keep an eye on this spot to see if it generates any excitement in the sky, particularly as we seem to have an extended clear spell coming up. Clear skies, Paul.

Thanks Paul for the good wishes. This is my first post on this forum, and what a start! This is 953 this morning, 394 frames in Registax, captured with the ETX90mm and Toucam with Thousand Oaks 2+ Filter. Processed in PSP.

Excellent shot John - I've just been having a look myself though my little ETX 70 being the only 'scope I have a filter for doesn't show anything like that detail but I did manage to get this shot with my little digital held to the eyepiece! Clear skies, Paul.

Thanks Pook, here's a wee image from earlier today taken with same setup. The left side of the penumbra has split away creating a curious collection of pores. The group in the left corner remain unnumbered as I write but have formed in the faculae which has followed 953 since it came round the limb. Thanks for looking!

John, thanks for posting those great images. I had a go at photographing the sunspost yesterday too, but the atmosphere seemed to be very unsettled and I couldnt get the images as sharp as yours. I think the rubbish barlow I was using might have had something to do with it as well though! Robert.

Thanks Robert. It was very difficult to find some shelter from the wind this morning, but here is 953 and 954 as of about 11am. It has grown considerably since yesterday and the penumbra on that left side seems to be coming away in waves. I see it now has the potential for X-class flares, I think this boy could blow!

This spot is looking very promising John - possible aurora by the end of the week?
Thanks for keeping us up to date.
Clear skies,
Paul.

I have been lucky enough to have imaged this spot on nine days in a row, but I fear it is now starting to decay. Hopefully not before it reaches the limb which can already be seen at the top right corner.

Excellent series of images John showing 953's gradual decay. Those would make a lovely montage! This spot is still visible with the naked eye.

Great shots everyone, I noticed that both Peter Paice and John McConnell were featured on spaceweather in relation to this sunspot. I'll put these photos in the gallery if noone has any objection. Robert.
