Here's an interesting article..... news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/6589157.stmAstronomers have found the most Earth-like planet outside our Solar System to date, a world which could have water running on its surface. The planet orbits the faint star Gliese 581, which is 20.5 light-years away in the constellation Libra. More evidence that planetary systems come in all shapes and sizes not just Super-Jupiters! Clear skies, Paul.

hmm, I think there would be some amazing tides on such a planet, being so close to Gliese 581 or maybe it is like the moon, in that the orbit has settled down and only one face ever sees light. It may well be getting pummled constantly by comets because it so close or maybe that phase was long ago and the system has settled down. It could also have problems with flares from Gliese 581. I think any life on this planet is going to have a tough time.
