Got a chance before lunch at new sunspot AR 1039. I was able to observe it on the 27th visually and I couldn't see any penumbra, today I could, so it appears to be growing. Image: ETX90mm, Philips Toucam, 2+ TO glass filter, 518 frames in Registax. Time 12:53UT. Attachments:

That's a superb image, with the Sun being so low!
Sky like chicken soup here (freezing fog), not much chance to see anything....

Thanks very much Brian, we had a clear enough gap here about that time so I grabbed the chance. We've had everything here this last couple of days including a beautiful lunar halo which lasted all evening! Freezing very hard right now, place is white!

Very nice image John. Looks like cycle 24 might finally be getting started!

Not having had the chance of seeing 1039 for a few days I was surprised to see it still growing with a wealth of small detail. The leading component also has a nice "bridge" across it. ETX90mm and Toucam, TO glass filter, 523 frames in Registax. Happy New Year! Attachments:

Nice white light image John, beats mine .... My final solar observation of the year (but hopefully not of the decade, which, contrary to popular opinion, still has a year to run!) Only one small prominence on show today, on the SW limb: 2009 Dec 31, 1208 UT. Solarscope 60 @ f/32, DMK41. Nothing on the disc apart from AR 11039, which is putting on an excellent show. 2009 Dec 31, 1210 UT. Solarscope 60 @ f/32, DMK41. 2009 Dec 31, 1154 UT. 80mm refractor @ f/24, Baader solar film & solar continuum filters, DMK41. 2009 Dec 31, 1214 UT. 60mm @ f/16.7, Lunt CaK B1200, DMK41. Transparency fair, seeing poor with some jet stream smearing & moderate boiling which seemed to be worst in white light. May I take this opportunity of wishing everyone clear skies, steady seeing and good fortune for the new year 2010.

Thanks Brian, you got a very good run of images there, it's good to see a bit of solar activity at last, it's been a long time coming! Lets hope for more of the same or better in 2010!

Horrid seeing conditions here today but still managed a parting shot at 1039, not very good I'm afraid Attachments:
