2009 Dec 15, 1208 UT. PST CaK, prime focus, DMK41. Not my usual technical standard - this is a single frame grab, not a stacked image. Do get a look at the Sun if you can (and have safe equipment!) - those spots are visible in white light at the moment!

Still a great shot Brian, not so easy with the sun so low this time of year!

Hmm, your WL effort is better than my feeble one 2009 Dec 15, 1217 UT. 80mm refractor @ f/12, Baader solar film & solar continuum filters, DMK41 But I also managed to image in CaK 2009 Dec 15, 1235 UT. 60mm refractor @ f/16.7, Lunt CaK B1200 diagonal, DMK41 and Ha 2009 Dec 15, 1226 UT. Solarscope 60 @ f/16, DMK41 with rather more success. Transparency good, seeing poor with some smearing in CaK, WL and considerable boiling which was heaviest in WL.

Your WL is still a very good effort for the conditions Brian, but the detail in the Ha is quite superb! The Ha seems to cut through the boiling conditions better than the others.

Got another crack at AR 1035 today at about 1300UT.This is now an enormous group and the biggest for quite some time. Having missed yesterday (16th) this shows that quite a lot of penumbra is now visible as well as a number of "bridges". Should be very photogenic as it nears the limb. Wonder will it make a return visit? Image: ETX90mm with Toucam, 458 images in Registax with a TO 2+ glass filter. time 13:17UT. Attachments:

Nice job John, especially given the altitude! I'm waiting for that CME to hit - weather looks good Fri night - touching wood!

Thanks Paul! Just about got this image today! (I have to wait until the sun reaches my driveway before I can image due to it's low altitude of about 11 degrees). And sure enough Murphy's Law came into force! As soon as I set up the scope the clouds came. however, I had about ten minutes to get this image of 467 frames in Registax. Wonderful how 24hrs changes a sunspot, (compare with image above on Dec 17th) Then I was talking about it coming round again, and today (18th) it seems to be starting to decay! however time will tell. Interesting shot John - it looks as if the two parts of the spot are now so far apart that they warrant separate numbers! The spot in front looks as if it might last a while around the back.
Paul.

Third lucky day in a row for imaging AR 1035 although conditions today were less than favourable. Very bouncy with a lot of high cloud. Still managed to get one passable avi showing it coming near the west limb. The leading component seemed to be larger than on the 18th, and we are beginning to see the large amount of faculae associated with this monster group. Thanks Johathan! This is 1035 today (Dec 20th) at 1330UT. It still looks very active as it prepares to round the limb. 471 frames in Registax in very bouncy conditions. Attachments:

Cheers,

That's a very good attempt given the suns low altitude etc etc. What filter are you using, and is that a single shot?
