Venus is now starting to race in towards the Sun, it's time to start making plans for the solar transit in the early morning of June 6th.
A site with a good clear north eastern horizon is required - together with lots of luck with the weather, and a willingness to either stay up very late or get up very early - sunrise (at Belfast) is at 0451 BST and the transit is finished at 0555 BST. A bit of research suggests to me that one of the best places in Northern Ireland which is reasonably accessible might be the car park at Knock Dhu above Ballygalley (grid ref D332072). Anyone have any better ideas?
Just a reminder that this is the last Venus transit that any of us who are alive today will have the opportunity to see - the next isn't until December 2117, so that's a 105.5 year wait for an event that isn't visible at all from anywhere in Europe, and another 8 years after that for one that might be - so a bit of an effort to see it is probably worth making.
Edit: Terry Mosely has identified Garron Point as location which may be better so that will be the "official" site!
