Hopefully everyone at Delamont tonight got a sighting of this amazing fireball [update - or space debris as now appears to be the case]! I just happened to be out in my garden in Lisburn at the time experimenting with taking a few shots of the stars when it came into view, breaking up into many bright pieces and moving quite slowly across the sky. I have never seen the likes of it before. It really was quite stunning, like a slow moving firework. After I picked my jaw up, I quickly swung my camera up and got this pot shot, a 5 second exposure at 22:55:52 precisely. The fireball was travelling directly east to west and overhead. The image shows it grazing Alpheratz, the top left star in The Great Square of Pegasus. I’d describe it as ‘fire’ coloured – orange/yellow; no sound that I noticed. Attachments:

Excellent photo! There were quite a few of us standing in Delamont watching it go overhead. At first as it appeared to rise from behind the trees I thought it was a firework with the trail of sparks behind, but it soon became apparent that it was going much higher and faster. From where we were it looked to travel almost directly overhead, we heard a few boom sounds and a rumble almost a minute after it passed. Tried to get a photo with the phone but the flash kept going off and washing out the photo. Good to see someone caught a good image of it Well done

Hi Colin, Brilliant image, very well done and lucky you, I missed it. We have a request from John Mason asking if he could have a copy of your image and report. If you could please send it to Andy McCrea (North Down Telescopes) he will forward to John. Your shot gives detail of the 'meteors??' against the background stars which is very useful. Thanks Philip

Hi Philip, apologies, only just saw your note. The image is on its way to Andy.
